Chembur is a suburb of Mumbai, India, as well as a railway station on the Harbour Line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway. It is a major transportation hub.

[ History

Originally a picnic spot on the north-eastern outskirts of Mumbai, Chembur is now considered 'the queen of the eastern suburbs' (Bandra remains 'queen of the suburbs'). The first building in Chembur is the 'Raote House' in Chembur's Gaothan near 10th road, developed in 1928. The name Chembur is a derivative of Chimbori (the Marathi word for crabs). Chembur was a causeway and a popular crabbing area earlier. The "Gram Daivat" or the village god of Chembur is "Ghatoba". "Ghatoba" Temple is situated on the road towards Ghatkopar. The name Ghatkopar probably came from "Ghatoba cha Kopra"(in Marathi) which means corner of "Ghatoba".
Geography

Major arteries originate at Chembur and lead to Navi Mumbai (New Bombay), Anushakti Nagar, Mankhurd, Govandi, Deonar, Ghatkopar, Sion, Kurla and Mulund-Thane. The Central Railway’s Harbour Line, services Chembur.
Chembur is 8.4 km long North-South and approximately 3 km broad East-West. (3.5 km at the broadest point). It lies between 19.072257°N & 18.996721° latitudes and 72.881096° and 72.910123° longitudes.
Occupying an area of 23.5 km², the bounds of Chembur extend from Tilak Nagar in the north (short of the Somaiyya Vidya Vihar campus) to the seafront in the south, past the Tata Thermal Power project. And from the Rashtriya Chemicals & Fertilizers plant in the West (short of the IMAX Adlabs entertainment multiplex) to the Shah & Anchor Engineering College (short of the Deonar bus depot). At the centroid of this roughly rectangular 23.5 km² area is a small industrial building called Sita Estate, roughly 500 m south of the Ashish movie theatre.
Demographics

The northern half of Chembur is residential and the southern half is industrial.
Old bungalows and villas in the northern half are making way for high-rise apartments. Like most suburbs of Mumbai today, Chembur has a cosmopolitan population.
Many of the founders of India's film industry, celebrities like Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, Shobhana Samarth and her daughters Nutan and Tanuja, Geeta Bali, Ashok Kumar, Om Prakash, Kishore Sahu, Surinder Kapoor resided in Chembur. Some of the present day Bollywood celebrities like Anil Kapoor and his brothers Boney (Achal Kapoor) and Sanjay Kapoor, Shilpa Shetty and her sister Shamita Shetty, Shankar Mahadevan, Ayesha Takia, Shreya Ghoshal, Malaika Arora and her sister Amrita Arora, Vidya Balan, and Birju Maharaj grew up in Chembur, where some of them still reside.
(Burmah) Shell Colony, Sahakar Nagar, Subhash Nagar and Tilak Nagar are old housing board tenement colonies in Chembur. Anushakti Nagar at Deonar -- the staff quarters of Bhabha Atomic Research Center, lies just outside the eastern boundary of Chembur. About Chembur

Chembur is a north-easten suburb of Mumbai. Due to its central location, Chembur is a major transportation hub. Roads passing to Navi Mumbai (New Bombay), Ghatkopar, Sion, Kurla and Mulund / Thane criss cross each other at Chembur. Chembur is serviced by the harbour line of the Central Railways.
Chembur was developed as an industrial suburb but today it is largely a residential suburb.Old time bungalows and villas are now making way for high-rise apartments.Chembur has a cosmopolitan population that is dominated by maharashtrians, sindhis and south indians.
Its proximity to the garbage incinerators gave it the title of being the 'gas chamber of Mumbai' but pollution has reduced in the recent years.
The suburb of Chembur is the most favoured destination, not only among new age home seekers, but also among top celebrities. Late Raj Kapoor preferred to set up his home and the famous RK Studio in this suburb. Yesteryear queen of the films Nutan also lived here for many years. In recent years, Bollywood superstars, like Vidya Balan and Shilpa Shetty, also grew up in here. After several decades, the charisma of Chembur has not ebbed for the citizens and celebrities. CG Plus speaks to some of the celebrities from the entertainment world to know their views and the connection they share with the suburb.

A casual talk with a friend Mr. P.H.Thyagaraju a scientist by profession, enthused the author to present a snapshot of Chembur and trace its phenomenal growth over the past 6 decades. It seemed easy at first thought. It was interesting as my parents came to Bombay (Mumbai) in 1919 and I was born in 1942 at Chembur. However, it soon appeared to be a daunting task. Information had to be gathered from old residents of the area, which was difficult as there was none to tell about the events or history of the place prior to 1900. The camera was a rare possession in those days; nor did it have the color range and accuracy of the present day camera. Nevertheless, an attempt is made here to present as accurately as is possible of the topography, events, activities and lifestyle of the people of Chembur during the period.
Prior to 1950, Chembur was a scenic idle village. It could well have been a dream of Kalidasa or the English poets. Chembur was dotted by forested hills, hillocks, streamlets meandering aimlessly, meadows jostling with paddy fields and gently caressed by the backwaters of the Arabian Sea on its northern, eastern southern and western edges In fact, Chembur including Trombay was island.

The name Chembur is derived from the Marathi word chemburee which means a large crab, From this we can infer that the place was infested with large crabs. As the Englishmen found it difficult to pronounce chemburee the name Chembur stuck. So it was with Kurla. The Marathi word coorla means small crab that was later changed to Kurla! The Trombay hills were a magnificent sight from far and near It was an equally awesome spectacle of the fields, villages and the sea from the peak of the Trombay hill. It is however, not possible now to have the view from the peak of the Trombay hill as it is out of bounds for security reasons.

For people from the city, Chembur was a favourite and proximate weekend picnic resort. People did not prefer to settle in Chembur as it was too far from the city! Moreover, there was no direct road or rail link to the city. It was also not in the municipal limits of Bombay. Therefore, Thane and Kalyan though away from the city work place and had direct rail access to the city and were better options than Chembur. Almost 90 % offices were in the city around Bori Bunder, Flora Fountain, Ballard Estate, Churchgate, Dhobi Talao, Masjid Bunder. Apart from the large textile mills in the Parel-Worli area there were very few offices or industries beyond Bandra or Sion which were the city limits.

The government, in order to encourage people to settle in Chembur, allotted free-hold plots of approximately 600 square yards each to interested individuals at the rate of about 2 annas (about 12 paise) per square yard! Several individuals acquired such plots in the vicinity of the railway station and along the Central Avenue, Station Avenue and adjoining roads between 1925 and 1940. Some allotees acquired the land but did not build houses for want of funds. The collector then notified that in terms of the freehold agreement the allotees will have to construct the houses within a specified period failing which a penalty of about half-anna per square yard per annum will be imposed!

Quite expectedly, houses came up during 1930 and 1940 on all the allotted plots each house (ground floor only) costing about Rs. 3000 - Rs. 4000! Typically, the house would consist of a hall, with a verandah, two bedrooms, large kitchen, study, washing place an attic and a bathroom. The toilet would be outside the main house in the backyard. All window frames and doors were made from teak wood. Every door and window would have a ventilator above which could be opened when the door or window is shut due to rain. The internal and external walls were 18” thick. The height from floor to ceiling was usually 12 feet. Some houses had a terrace. Most houses had tiled roofs. Most houses in the Cherai, Gaothan and surrounding villages had tiled roof and those areas had no wide metalled roads. After completion of the house, the construction workers-men and women - mostly from Andhra would dance in the evening singing songs in their language in front of the owner’s family to bid good-bye! Large colourful rangoli decorations would be seen at the entrance of houses, especially during Divali and other festivals. That was middle-class housing! Difficult to imagine today, eh?

There was a huge tank on 1st Road It measured about 700 feet in length and 500 feet in width. The tank was full of clean water all through the year. The bunds on the south, west and north of the tank had many large trees, mostly tamarind. A portion of the Station Avenue runs parallel to the western edge of the tank while Road No. 1 runs along the eastern edge of the tank, which then had railing. The bungalows on this road had a magnificent view of the tank. Ganesh idols were immersed in the tank during the Ganesh festival. The 10-day Ganesh Festival was conducted at the open space in Vinayak Bhavan opposite the then post office. The local people with children actively participated in the festival. Those days the idols were made of clay.

White lotus plants came up in the tank during 1953-1960.The urchins would jump in the water to pluck the lotus and sell them in the Bhulingeshwar temple located to the west of the tank. After 1960, the tank was drying up rapidly and it finally dried in 1968-69.
Chembur and Trombay had independent local bodies. Many parts of Chembur towards the north and east (present day Tilaknagar, Cheddanagar and Pestonsagar) were submerged by backwaters during high tide. The saltpans in those areas were under the jurisdiction of the Salt Commissioner. Country boats were used to transport the salt to places on the coast. The creek on the Chembur-Ghatkopar border was the terminus of the boats. The road from Chembur to the creek was extremely narrow and lonely and had no lights and yet it was a favorite place to spend an evening either alone or with a friend. There were mangroves and shrubs along the creek. There were many large haystacks on the bank of the creek and fires were frequent. Cattle would graze lazily in the vast open areas of Chembur, Govandi, Deonar, Borla, Trombay, Ghatla, Mahul and Cherai. As there were no shops or stalls in that area, one had to buy “chana’ near Chembur station to enjoy the lonely walk towards the creek! During the low tide, some areas near the present Cheddanagar were used to cremate the dead. There were no slums in Chembur prior to 1956. Except for the area near the station, there was no shop or house along the road to Govandi. This road was deserted and lined with huge trees on both sides. None ventured far on this road, as it was lonely and dark. Most of the social activity was around the Chembur naka, Station Avenue, Central Avenue, Chembur Camp and the fishing hamlet of Trombay.

The tahsildar's office would function from a tiled house in the camp area. The Beggars Home was set up by the government on the Ghatkopar-Mahul road near Chembur naka and the Home for Destitute Women on Sion Trombay road. One is left wondering why the government chose to locate both these homes in Chembur when vast areas were available in the north and west of the city. Deonar, Trombay, Govandi, Mahul, Maroli, Cherai, Vasinaka, Ghatla, Mankhurd, Wadhavli, Borla were villages around Chembur. There were some paddy fields in Ghatla and other villages until 1955. Chembur and these villages were merged with the Bombay Municipal Corporation in 1949-50 and referred to as “extended suburbs”. Several schemes for water supply for Bombay city were taken up and implemented from 1856 to 1957. Subsequently other water supply projects were taken up to meet the increased needs of the city. Prior to the merger with the city, the suburbs were not provided with sewerage facilities. The inhuman way of manual disposal of sewage was disbanded in 1950. A sewerage pumping station was constructed in Deonar and Ghatkopar. Population figures of Chembur prior to 1930 are not available. Population of Bombay city (census of 1901) was 7,76,006. According to a special census in 1906,the population was 9,77,822(density of population being 35273 per square mile). The city’s area was then 22 square miles. Though rough censuses were undertaken in 1698,1744 and 1814, a properly organized census was initiated by Sir Bartle Frere in 1864 that recorded a population of 8,16,502 for the city. There were no hospitals in the area! The oldest English medium school (St. Anthony’s High School) was started in 1932 in the present pavilion consisting of a single large hall. Wooden partitions were used to separate each class. Initially there were four classes from Std.I to Std.IV Each class had about 20 students. Students would have to continue further classes at a sister school in Byculla up to Std.XI.The school was shifted to the present spacious premises in 1953. It was a co-ed institution until 1961 after which a separate school was set up for boys. Schools in Marathi medium were set up near Chembur Naka, Ghatla, Mahul, Govandi and Trombay.

The area near the station was generally referred as the Hindu colony and the area around the St. Anthony’s School and the roads from 11th to 16th as the Christian colony. The post office with two counters was in a rented single room in a building called Ganga Nivas on plot No. 59 at the junction of Station Avenue and road number 20. It was later shifted to a spacious tiled old dilapidated building on Sion-Trombay road for a short period before it moved to its owned premises at the present location. There were two deliveries of letters- the first in morning at 10 a.m. and the second at 2 p.m. The postal number for Chembur was then “Bombay-38”.

Chembur was not a part of the city until 1948-49. The only links with the city were through a rail line up to Kurla and a small narrow road through Chunabatti going to Sion. The single line from Kurla to Chembur was laid in 1906 for garbage clearance. The line was opened for passenger traffic on 4th December 1924. The train on this line with four conventional wooden bogies (with toilets) hauled by a steam engine would ply every one-hour between Kurla and Mankhurd. There was no train service on this line after 10 pm. Occasionally a goods train with about 10 bogies would pass through late in the night to transport goods largely meant for the naval stores depot at Mankhurd. Few people traveled by this train it being only half occupied. Most passengers knew each other personally. When the train at Kurla was missed, one had to wait for an hour sipping tea at the stall on platform no. 8.

It was a hilarious scene in the early mornings to see the fisherwomen with large baskets of fish traveling from Mankhurd to Kurla and then on to Victoria Terminus or Byculla! This train plied up to Kurla on platform No. 9. The engine would be detached from the train and be attached to the other end for its journey to Mankhurd. The engine would again be detached at Mankhurd and attached to the Kurla-end! People at Chembur would get ready to go the station after hearing the engine whistle whilst the train started the journey at Mankhurd! Often, the driver would wait a few minutes at Chembur station for passengers! The station was originally behind the present day Shivalaya market and hence the road opposite the then station was numbered as road No. 1. There was only one low level platform and had no tea stall or bookstall. About 10-15 people would alight from the train during the evening. The noise of the engine could be heard in Chembur as soon as the train left Kurla or Mankhurd.

An interesting practice of the railways and the municipality may be mentioned at this juncture. The garbage of Bombay city was dumped in the garbage railway yard at Mahalakshmi on the BB&CR (today’s Western Railway; the Central Railway was earlier known as the Great Indian Peninsular Railway). The garbage would then be loaded in grey-coloured open wagons to be transported to the garbage dumping ground at Deonar near Govandi. This garbage train would go at slow speed and pass through Chembur in midday about 1 p.m. leaving behind its obnoxious stench that lasted even 10 minutes after the train had passed. The train was hauled by a small diesel engine. The slow return journey from Deonar would begin at 3 p.m. In a lighter vein, it can be said that the garbage of Bombay was thrown in the neighboring village of Chembur!!

It was a thrill to travel by the steam engine train chugging to Kurla and from there by electric local to Dadar or Victoria Terminus to visit friends or shopping or sightseeing. The children would be dressed in clean cotton clothes on such trips much to the envy of the kids in the neighbourhood.

The steam engine era ended in 1952 with the introduction of the electric local train between Kurla and Mankhurd. Electric traction on the Kurla-Mankhurd service was introduced on 11th May 1952. Doubling of the track between Kurla and Mankhurd was completed on 18th September 1959. The electric local had four coaches. The composite First class and ladies compartment was at the VT end and the remaining three third class coaches behind the First class coach. There was no second-class coach in the local. The First class coach had spacious seats, which could be adjusted, in the direction the train went or the opposite direction as desired. Later the train service was extended to Victoria Terminus via the harbor line and number of coaches increased to six.

The pace of life was slow, leisurely and free of tension. There was a benign smile on every face-young and old, man and woman. The children were put in school at the age of five. There was no talk of pre-nursery or kintergarten. The child indeed spent the first five years at home with the family. Children had real play time in the evenings as they played with friends. Unlike in the present day, only the mediocre student would stealthily go for tuitions! Vacations (summer, winter and Divali) were full of excitement with no homework or tuitions to be bothered about. How sadly different it is today when students rush to “vacation” classes. Climbing trees to steal mangoes or tamarind, pelting stones to get guavas or berries was an enjoyable sport, though it was necessary to be alert lest one is caught by the owner. Fresh milk would be delivered at the doorstep every morning by the “bhayya” Extra milk if needed would be provided. The milk “bhayya” would take another round in the afternoon at about 3 o'clock.

The refrigerator was to be seen only in the kitchens of the few rich. Washing machines were unknown. The maidservant came in twice a day to clean the house, wash vessels and clothes. Sometimes even water the plants in the garden. The radio would provide news and music eagerly awaited by listeners. However, not many could afford the radio. In addition, a radio license fee was payable annually. In the early fifties, listening to Radio Ceylon, especially the extremely popular Binaca Geetmala on Wednesday nights was a familiar pastime with members of the family around the dinner table. The Radio Ceylon would play a song of the legendary Saigal at 7.55 every morning, which was a good beginning for the day. One is instantly reminded of the popular song of Pankaj Mullick "Guzar gaya woh zamana kaisa, kaisa"!! Another favorite of the day was the daily listeners’ choice of film songs relayed by Radio Pakistan in the afternoon between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.

There were few motor cycles-the only 2-wheeler in those days. Cars, mostly British and American models (Ford Mercury, Ford Prefect, Ford Anglia, Hillman, Austin, Morris, Studebaker, Pontiac, Dodge, Plymouth, Desoto, Vauxhall) were even less in Chembur. One family owned a Buick the costliest car of the times. The bi-cycle was a prized and useful possession of many. There were no public telephone booths. Very few had a telephone the use of which was often restricted to emergencies. Malls were unheard of. Festival shopping was mostly at Dadar or the city. School uniforms had to be procured from a specified shop in the city.

The BEST started the tramway in 1874 and the bus service much later in the city. The bullock cart was a means of transport for people and goods in the Chembur-Trombay Island. That was neither convenient nor comfortable. A private operator used to run a bus service between Sion and Trombay carrying mainly fisher folk of Trombay and others from surrounding villages. The conductor of the bus would have to get down often along the route to drive away the cattle with a baton. The first BEST bus service (suburban route “N”) was introduced in 1956 between Sion and Trombay via Chunabatti. Later the same year. Route N2 was started between Chembur (opposite Canara Bank) and Sion. Route “P” (suburban) was operated between Ghatkopar and Atomic Energy Establishment as it was then called (the present BARC). This bus would often halt at the railway crossing at Chembur for 5-10 minutes as the road was closed for vehicles to give passage to the trains. Also, route “L” plied between Mahul and Kurla East. The running time for these routes was 25 minutes to 39 minutes. On completion of the highway between Sion and Chembur direct routes A6 Ltd and A8 Ltd operated between Chembur Colony and Electric House and Chembur Station and Electric House respectively. Other bus routes were introduced subsequently connecting Chembur to the other parts of the city, northern and western suburbs. The fare in 1967 between Sion and Trombay was 30 paise. The Deonar depot came up in 1969.

There were no auto rickshaws. During the nineteen fifties taxis would hesitate to ply to Chembur due to lack of “return fare” and the fear of being looted. as the area was deserted.

There was no building more than two floors. Most houses were independent ground floor structures with adequate open space around. Many houses had a well laid out garden of flowers such as the bright red hibiscus, sweet smelling parijath both special for the worship of Lord Ganesh. The pleasant fragrance of flowers, sometimes a strong aroma of the champak and sontaka would fill the gardens. There were also trees of mango, jambul, chikko, custard apple, banana and vegetables like brinjal, ladies finger, beans, and tomatoes in many gardens. Gardening was a passionate hobby and a lot of time on Sundays and holidays was spent trimming, watering and cleaning the garden. Garden implements like spades of different sizes, small hand plough, gamelas, water hose, cans and garden scissors were stored in the houses.

It was great fun to watch the aeroplanes taking off or landing at the old SantaCruz (Kalina) airport from housetops in Chembur, as there were no obstacles in between. Eyebrows were raised when a taxi entered Chembur! Visitors and new comers would be guided with care to their destination.

The famous RK studio was a distinct landmark of Chembur. when indoor shooting was popular. The areas in and around Chembur were favorite sites for film units. The Union Park near the RK studios was home to many popular actors and others connected with film production. The popular actress of Hindi and Marathi cinema Nutan stayed in a bungalow on 10th Road for many years. Hers was the only bungalow with a swimming pool. A setting of a film on the Rani of Jhansi caught fire at Govandi during shooting in the early part of 1953. There were frequent fires in the areas near Deonar and Govandi.

Monkeys were a regular menace and would harass the women around the station and the tank areas. These creatures would descend suddenly at about 10 a.m. in search of food when the men and children would be away. The areas were also infested with snakes; some deadly, Hyenas and jackals strayed occasionally at night from the Trombay hills. Their hooting and howls could be heard at nights. Many rare birds big and small, of colorful hues such as the melodious koel, bluebird, kingfisher, the red breasted robin, the common black-yellow-brown mina, sparrow, woodpecker, owl and parrot were often seen in the area. The white graceful gulls, starlings near the sea and saltpans and swallows are missed today. A few families reared fowls and goats in their homes. Some cattle sheds are seen even today. The daring vultures can even today be seen hovering over the Deonar dumping ground Many parts of Chembur were sparsely inhabited. Chembur was (and is) the greenest suburb of Bombay, the golf course also contributing to the greenery.

After partition, a large number of refugees were resettled in barracks and small tenements in what is even today called Chembur Camp. There were few small industrial units located away from the railway stations of Chembur and Govandi. The ayurvedic factory of the Sandu family located near Naka was started in the early years of the century. The only unit in the north was the glass factory (since closed) on the narrow Ghatkopar road. The few people passing on the road would wait and watch the workers of the factory blowing the glass to make bottles and containers. The watchman of the factory would ring the bell at hourly interval, which could be heard as far as the railway station.

The families of Chemburkar, Mhatre, Purav, Pathare, Sandu, Rane, Sathe, Karambelkar, Ghanekar, Bhatte, Adhikari, Raote, Shinde, Acharya, Pradhan Patil, Patankar, Patharpekar, Pancholi, Irani, Saores and other old residents still reside in Chembur. The old temples situated to the west of the tank (present swimming pool) on Station Avenue were set up in 1865. The temples of Ganesh, the two Shiva temples (Someshwar and Bhulingeshwar), Ram, Laksman, Sita, Hanuman, Sheetaladevi, Vithobha, Rukmini are located in these pretincts. The electrification of the temples was carried out in 1920. The temples would be gaily decorated with sweet scented flowers and illuminated on festival days like Ganesh Chaturthi, Mahasivaratri, Gudipadva, Ramnavami, Daserrah, Ashadi Ekadasi. Large number of devotees would visit the temples on these days and special discourses or religious programmes conducted in the temple. There were many wells including the well that is still in use at the temple premises. The priests and employees of the temple were provided residence in the premises. The pristine atmosphere and the tranquil old world charm is still retained within the temple premises. Small old temples can be found in Trombay, Mahul, Govandi and Wadavli villages. The temple at Trombay is large and has a tank in the premises.

Tragedy struck one night (the exact year is not known but it must have been 1951) - at about eight o'clock when a lady of the convent returning by train from Kurla fell in the well in the jungle along the central avenue close to the station. The lady had gone to attend call of nature without knowing that there was a well that had no protective wall. There was hardly any activity or people on the roads after 7 p.m. People who lived near the well heard the scream of the lady and rushed to the spot. The lady’s companion waiting for her return was weeping. It was pitch dark and efforts to save the woman failed. The following morning the body of the woman was brought out by the Fire Brigade.

The only cinema hall “Vijay” was a kutcha structure with wooden benches as in a school classroom! This cinema hall was located on Sion-Trombay road at Chembur naka opposite the present Vijay cinema. Open drains would pass through the cinema hall and one had to take care not to slip into them!

Occasionally, an outsider would provide entertainment to the locals by bringing trained monkeys and bears to perform acrobatics. He would of course pocket the meagre cash collected. The snake charmers would arrive to entertain crowds during the month of Shravan after the monsoon. A branch of Sane Guruji Kathamala was opened in Anik, Mahul in 1954. There were no crowds even during the festival season. Hardly anyone dared to venture beyond the present Diamond Garden even during the day as the area was lonely and there was thick jungle on both sides of the road towards Trombay or Sion. As there were no street lights the area would be pitch dark after 7 p.m. The Diamond Garden had not been given any name then. The garden was a dense jungle of trees, shrubs and bushes with a narrow circular lonely road going from the north-end of the garden to the Sion-Trombay road.

Chembur was a clean sleepy village until 1954 when large industries and establishments came to be set up. The two refineries, the Atomic Energy Establishment (as it was then called), the Rashtriya Chemicals & Fertilizers factory, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, the International (earlier Indian) Institute of Population Studies came up during 1954-60. The construction by the Bombay Housing Board of houses in Station Colony (Subash Nagar), the Shell Colony, and the Township Colony (Tilak Nagar) in 1955-58 transformed the area into the then largest residential township in Asia.

The first ever visit of the Prime Minister to Chembur was in 1956 when Jawaharlal Nehru inaugurated the Atomic Energy Establishment the refinery at Mahul and laid the foundation stone of Shell Colony -a residential colony for the refinery workers near the station.

Earlier in 1950, another dignitary to visit Chembur was Bharat Ratna Dr.M. S.Subbalakshmi who gave an excellent music performance (her first in Chembur) at the then newly constructed hall (Sunderlal Khimchand hall) at the municipal premises on road No. 10. It was a memorable performance by the young singer who shot to fame a little earlier. The hall was packed to capacity by a local Marathi audience and many who were eager to listen to the concert had to stand in the road. These were the beginnings from which Chembur developed into a major hub for culture and fine arts.

There were few schools, both English and Marathi medium. There was no college in the Trombay Island. Children passing matric (then Std.XI) had to go to the nearest college in Matunga or the city for further study. There was neither bank nor a good eatery. The first bank to open was that of the Canara Bank Ltd on 2nd.April, 1959. It is astounding to mention that there are as many as 18 branches of cooperative, private and public sector banks today on the Central Avenue (present Swami Dayanand Saraswati Marg) of Chembur. There are presently several bank branches in Govandi, Mankhurd, Anushaktinagar, Chembur Colony, Tilak Nagar, Cheddanagar, Peston Sagar, Swastik Park, Sindhi Society, Trombay, Borla, Deonar and Mahul.

Much more can be written about good old Chembur. You have the old world charm, the fishing hamlets, the modern glossy paneled offices, the refineries and atomic energy establishments which are of strategic importance to the country juxtaposed alongside the largest slum in Bainganwadi-Deonar belt. If you are residing in Chembur or have some connection with this place, consider it a privilege to be associated with its marvelous grooming from a sleepy village of crabs and fields to a bustling commercial city of great significance to the country! Strive to relive the quite and clean past! Yeh hai Chembur meri jaan!

Chembur is a well settled and well managed Northeast area of Mumbai city. Two main highways (Mumbai- Nasik and Mumbai-Pune) are passes through Chembur. Chembur is serviced by the harbor line of Central Railways. Chembur started out as an industrial area, but now it is a large residential suburb.
